Media Censorship in Kashmir Post Abrogation of Article 370: A Case Study

Abstract

In the contemporary world the Internet plays a vital role for media organizations to receive content across the Globe and helps in disseminating the same. Freedom of expression has always been emphasized as an essential basis for the democratic functioning of any society. The democratic credentials of any State are judged by the extent of the freedom of Press/Media enjoys. It provides comprehensive and objective information of all aspects of the country’s social, political, economic and cultural life. As press is known to be the fourth pillar of democratic nations that is ensured by its constitution; hence it is considered as the most important institution in the society. But the situation with Kashmir media is totally different because of restrictions on it put by the government authorities and censorship in place makes it difficult for media organizations to operate independently, which is the basic right of any media fraternity. Frequent suspension of communication services is one of the main issues discussed in Kashmir. This move of the government not only violates the basic right to freedom of speech and expression, but also gives rise to many other problems due to blackouts. The study looks at a set of objectives to understand the government’s strategy of imposing censorship on print and other media outlets post Abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir. The study will also help in understanding different perspectives of censorship on media houses in Kashmir post especially after scrapping the special status of erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.
