Sense of Empowerment Through Social Media Exposure: Perception vs. Reality

Abstract

The study puts forth changing social and psychological frames through enhanced use of social media during Corona times. With the help of in-depth unstructured interviews of 08 lower-middle class members of the Indian society, the study strives to understand the changes that might have emerged during last 2 years. The common practices that have been developed among the interviewees are frequent status update on WhatsApp, renewing reels on Instagram and stories on Facebook etc. With ample of time in hand and curtailed opportunities to utilize it appropriately, social media has emerged as a savior of masses’ attention and time in developing countries. On being asked about the perceived value, the interviewees have agreed that it provides a sense of being connected with the dear ones which in turn has helped in fighting loneliness that has emerged during partial / full lock downs. Interestingly, the participants did realize the lack of real value nonetheless being in touch with the dear ones, ability to use high-tech devices, skill to follow the latest trends etc. has provided a sense of betterment and empowerment.
