Abstract
This paper addresses hate speech in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. A content analysis of Springer’s publications during the years 2020 and 2021 was applied on this topic to reveal the manifestations of hate speech resulting from the global epidemic and to highlight its specificities and repercussions on humanity. The data shows antipathy against China as the virus’s origin; the pandemic has amplified structural grievances, including hatred of indigenous Brazilians and blacks, and contributed to a revival of deep-rooted discrimination against Chinese and Asians in global media. Thus, the study confirms that hate took a dangerous turn during 2020 and 2021 regarding the intensity and frequency of relevant online and offline events. Since the present paper focuses on analyzing hateful expressions and actions, the author recommends a particular focus in future research on anti-hate speech to analyze its components and effects on individuals and societies.
