Role of Media in Financial Sector: A Case Study of the Record-breaking Zomato Initial Public Offering

Abstract

The Indian stock market is one of the largest in Asia, with a daily trade volume of two-lakh crores. A subtle but important factor fueling this growth is the growth of financial literacy amongst Indians through the medium of social media such as Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Telegram. The recently debuted Zomato IPO has broken all financial expectations and analytical fundamentals and baffled experts with its performance on the back of extremely well used and well-timed social media campaigns, to the extent to which people believe in the growing multitude of social media ‘influencers’, and the extent to which they are ready to follow the advice that the ‘influencers’ give, without factual analysis behind these suggestions. The paper attempts examines the different facets of the role of social media in propagating ideas and luring the young masses of the country from ordering on the popular food delivery platform to being actual investors in its growth through a qualitative approach using secondary sources of data.
