Description

"Anxiety and Noise in Public Culture: Thinking Free Speech and Abundant Communication"

I joined Maynooth University in 2005, and I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies.

My research interests are in the politics of race, racism and multiculturalism in European politics, freedom of speech and ideas of 'hate speech' in digital media environments, the future of public service media, and the integration of social theory to media theory.

My past books include The Crises of Multiculturalism: Racism in a Neoliberal Age, written with Alana Lentin (Zed Books 2011), the co-edited National Conversations: Cultural Diversity and Public Service Media (Intellect Books 2014) and After Charlie Hebdo: Terror, Racism, Free Speech (Zed Books 2017).

Most recently, Racism and Media (Sage Publications) came out in summer 2019, and Is Free Speech Racist? in summer 2020 by Polity Press in their Debating Race series.

I am a Docent in Media and Communications at the Swedish School of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki. With Alana Lentin, I edit the book series Challenging Migration Studies (Rowman & Littlefield). I write occasionally for The Guardian (profile here)
