2023 Special Focus - Who Can We Trust? Ethical and Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Digital Communication Systems

Artificial Intelligence has been positioning itself more and more strongly in all areas of people's lives. It is also becoming a critical intermediary in the work of organizations, universities, companies, administrations, and governments. The evolution of this disruptive technology in the media environment of journalism generates benefits and job opportunities. But it also presents challenges, creating new risks and dangers. These both underlie the design of AI, with its non-transparent mechanisms. It also prompts critical analysis of its applicability and effects. One such effect is growing disinformation that in some respects turns people into "manipulated entities". Much of this disinformation is attributed to the use of AI in digital media, generating a disdain for the professional news media and journalistic discipline. Addressing the ethics of the AI used by the media on the Internet becomes the cornerstone for research and action, and the basis for trust in the journalistic media as responsible communication sources and as pillars of democracies in the world.
