Food Security and Sustainability Narratives: Salmon Aquaculture as Case Study

Abstract

Food systems transition toward sustainability is guided by general sustainability narratives of environmental impact reduction, circular economy and corporate social responsibility. We question where global food security fits as a sustainability guiding idea. The farmed salmon industry in Norway is a globally major seafood producer with declared commitment to sustainability. We take it as case study to highlight the adoption of the different sustainability narratives in practice. We did macronutrient and micronutrient modeling for the farmed salmon value chain and came up with conclusions on how the element of global food security is a prospective drive for sustainability transition.
