Nutritional Behaviors Related to Gastric Cancer

Abstract

Developing an educational program on the prevention of common diseases such as cancer is a health necessity. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of nutritional training programs related to gastric cancer in married working women in Isfahan in 2012. The present study is a quasi-experimental interventional research. The study population was 72 married women working in Isfahan. The samples were randomly divided into experimental and control groups with 36 participants each. Criteria for inclusion in the study were: having Iranian nationality, working women, married, literate, at least 20 years old and resident of Isfahan. Data collection tool was a questionnaire with alpha Cronbach 0.81. Based on the pre-test results, the nutritional training package was designed to suit the educational needs of the samples. Then, immediately and 3 months after the educational intervention, data were collected again in both experimental and control groups and analyzed using an independent t-test at the alpha level of 0.05. The mean age of the experimental group was 33.12 and the control group was 33.22 and there was a significant difference (p³0.001) in the experimental and control groups in the mean scores of knowledge (89.72 vs. 36.85), attitude (69.50 vs. 34.98) and performance (75.63 vs. 40.22) arose after the intervention. The findings show the effectiveness of nutrition education package on increasing the knowledge, attitude and practice of working women about nutritional behaviors related to gastric cancer.
