Popularising Foraging through Social Media: Young Urban Indians Reclaiming Local Knowledge

Abstract

Over the past three years, Instagram, with its ability to display and promote a certain aesthetic of food has encouraged young urban Indians to use the space to promote local food cultures. One of the themes that young urban Indians seem to find of interest is that of urban foraging - of finding “nature”, often seen to be non-anthropomorphic, rural, unchanging, becoming dynamic, mixing with urban infrastructure, encouraging a pursuit tinged with a need to overcome loss of local knowledge forms. This study aims to explore and better understand the reasons behind the creation and consequential solutions that urban food foraging pages on social media in Indian urban spaces.
