The Alternative Grassroots Food Initiatives to Combat Food Waste in Portugal

Abstract

In Portugal, tons of food are lost and wasted every year along the food supply chain. Despite the media and the state attention directed to food waste reduction efforts of large national level organisations there are also dozens of local and regional small to medium scale initiatives aimed on FLW reduction working to achieve SDG 12.3 in Portugal. These local and regional initiatives are equipped with profound knowledge of local needs and opportunities and are becoming even more important as they complement the centralized donations networks and often act in locations where other services may be unavailable. Such local and regional initiatives throughout the country address food waste through hybrid types of interventions (prevention, raising awareness, etc.) aimed at various audiences, from households to school age children, that may or may not include distribution of surplus food. We map existing local and regional small to medium scale initiatives aimed on food loss and food waste reduction related to SDG 12.3 using a variety of methodologies, such as surveys and interviews, including a detailed study of their approaches to food waste reduction. On a more systemic level, understanding what kinds of food waste reduction efforts are being undertaken throughout the country, what challenges they are faced with and how they can be assisted in this important work would go a great way to promote Portugal’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, improve policy and regulatory measures taken, raising awareness and contributing to community resilience.
