Public Religion in the Indonesian Context: Its Role and Impact

Abstract

The relationship between religion and politics has becoming actual topic in public discussion in Indonesia for long time. The role of religion in public sphere is increasing but it can bring two sides of effects. It could become a source of reconciliation in one side, but in other side it also could become a source of violence and tension. In Indonesia context we can see the imbalance of these two sides. Becoming source for violence more dominant than to be the way of bridging reconciliation. This paper elaborates on the role of public religion in the Indonesia context which is colored by plurality in religion, culture, tribe and race. Through library research about the role of public religions in Indonesia, this research wants explores performance, role, and function of public religion. It begins with a description of public religions in Indonesia, continues with plurality and the role of public religion in society and finally proposes some recommendations.
