Pesantren and Sustainable Development Goals : Reviewing the Economic Potential and Aspirations of Pesantren in Java Island

Abstract

The economic empowerment of boarding schools and students can positively support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Indonesia, research on Islamic boarding schools and SDGs has been started since 2012. Some of this research shows that Islamic boarding schools have proven to be able to support SDGs programs, especially in the aspect of environmental health. In addition, the halal industry also appears to play a role in developing the creative economy to support the SDGs. This type of research is a mixed method, a combination of two research models: qualitative literature and the field. The literature approach was chosen to analyze various government policies related to Islamic boarding schools, ranging from RPJMN to practical programs in government decisions and technical instruction. The criteria for Islamic boarding schools are classified based on the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs No. 1252 of 2021. The interviews were conducted with selected business actors. In addition, a focus group discussion was used to clearly understand what entrepreneurial students think about government initiatives and policies. The steps of data analysis are carried out by following the method suggested by Miles and Huberman using N-Vivo. The results of the phenomenology study with the help of N-Vivo Software show several results. Pesantren Categories I, II, and III focus on developing small and medium enterprises and assisting the community. Pesantren Category IV focuses on the mission of the Go International Islamic Boarding School.
