Feminist-Informed Yoga and Jain Way of Life: Ideas for Health Promotion in Canada and Abroad

Abstract

Yoga is now a one billion dollar industry but the ancient spiritual roots of yoga have been lost in contemporary Canadian (and beyond) culture. This poster presents the author’s recent doctoral work and upcoming book, on feminist-informed yoga and the Jain way of life, in the context of health promotion. More specifically, I explore the uncomfortable relationship between spirituality and health studies, and the rich yoga traditions that offer healing for marginalized groups throughout the world. I also explore how spirituality in health promotion can be taught in the classroom as a revolutionary tool.
