Adopting the Mosque institution as a Strategy for National Security in Nigeria

Abstract

Mosque as a religious institution has always been playing major and positive roles in the lives of Muslims in all their endeavours. However, the main objective of this paper is to contextualize a role for the mosque in the realization of enhancing peace and security for the Nigerian nation, Islamic countries, and by extension the world at large. It is conceived that the mosque institution is an indispensable entity in any given society. Consequently, the devastating nature of insecurity which has become a quagmire threatening the unity and existence of man in the contemporary world, and especially in Nigeria as a corporate entity, requires collaboration with the mosque to address the puzzle because it is expected that all Muslims attend one activity or the other inside the Mosque. The paper found that majority of Mosques in Nigeria has failed in the realization of the purposes for which Mosque is being founded. However, the Mosque is expected to be a place where positive lessons are impacted in the lives of the people. The study combines descriptive and exploratory designs. It reviewed data from research works, newspapers’ reports, encyclopedias and other relevant secondary sources. Taking a clue from Islamic history, the study proposed an exploration of scholarly admonition model, registration and documentation as well as comprehensive welfare as a way of collaboration with the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to achieve peace, stability, security, and development. It concludes that a mosque is very apt in addressing the issues of insecurity of the country.
