Ego-Dissolution and Nondual Awareness in Substance and Non-substance Induced Non-ordinary States

Abstract

The intent of this study is to investigate the range of ego-dissolution, as measured by the Ego-Dissolution Inventory (EDI; Nour, Evans, Nutt, & Carhart-Harris, 2016), in a population who claims to have undergone a mystical experience and/or experienced a non-ordinary state of consciousness. The participants provided self-reported responses to both the NADA-T and EDI scales. The EDI has been used to measure substance-induced altered states but has not been used to determine the degree of ego-dissolution in non-substance induced non-ordinary states. Further, the correlation between nondual awareness and EDI between substance and non-substance induced altered states has not been explored. This study found a strong positive relationship between the EDI subscales and the NADA Bliss Dimension. A significant, but weaker relationship was found between the EDI subscales and the NADA Self-Transcendence dimension.
