Dignity According to Avicenna and Ibn Arabi

Abstract

From mystical literature it is understood that Sufi masters, despite the virtues writers, refrained to mention the miracle and dignity as unnatural and disbelief matters and generally during the initial emergence of the Sufism, extraordinary power of saint didn’t have an important role in their position. But gradually with the emergence of the Sufi catenae, since each of them used that to prove their legitimacy, found an extraordinary significance and a kind of glory to prove dignity of saint which was prevailed by disciples. In this paper, we look at dignity from the perspective of two of the most prominent Islamic scholars namely Avicenna and Ibn Arabi. Avicenna, in tenth chapter of References and Punishments book, mentioned secrets of dignity and unusual affairs of theosophists and dealing with some examples, tries to justify this phenomenon from the logical perspective. Ibn Arabi also quotes many examples of Sufism dignities in his works and in addition, by dividing unusual affairs in miracles, dignities, magic and conjuration.
