Religious Minorities and the State: Current Conflicts and Alliances

Abstract

The history of most of the world’s religions has been a history of frequent conflicts and tensions with the state, on some occasions, and strategic alliances and agreements in others. The ultimate origin of these conflicts and alliances has always been the control of power in its various manifestations. The central issue has been to have the total hegemony of power in society or accept to share it. In today’s modern or traditional, and plural or repressive societies, conflicts and alliances have not disappeared. They are maintained, although they have taken different forms and expressions from those of the past. The question for us at the moment is to raise the situation of religious minorities. In this paper we expose and describe some features that these conflicts and alliances are taking today and the way in which they affects religious minorities.
