Eastern Orthodox Understanding of the Psychological Concept of Mourning as a Step to Spirituality

Abstract

The paper negotiates the concept of spirituality within the realm of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Spirituality has become the centre of attention for many theologian and religious leaders. However, many psychologists and psychotherapists fail to acknowledge the beneficial aspect of spirituality on individuals’ mental health. The paper focuses on one of the fathers of spirituality in Eastern Orthodox Christianity while at the same time trying to create link between spirituality; especially the phenomenon of mourning and psychotherapeutic theories. It appears that these contradictory fields for many, share the same values and beliefs when it comes to spirituality. The paper draws attention to the fact that even though psychotherapeutic theorists and practitioners do not mention spirituality, they follow precisely what it happens to be called step seven in the ladder of spirituality according to St John.
