The "Pluralism and Coexistence" Foundation in Spain: Fifteen Years Cooperating with Religious Denominations

Abstract

The year 2004, the “Council of Ministers of Spain” agreed on a proposal from the “Ministry of Justice” to create a state public foundation called “Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation”. The initiative of the Spanish government anticipates the changes that religious plurality was going to propose. Its main objective is to face the challenges posed by the full exercise of religious freedom and the improvement of coexistence in Spain. On the fifteenth anniversary of the constitution of the Foundation, attached to the “Ministry of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory”, it intends to deepen this proposal in the knowledge and dissemination of the objects of the Foundation, contributing to the promotion of religious freedom in Spain, under the terms of the Spanish Constitution and the laws established for that fundamental right. This poster uses a procedure for analysis and synthesis of the activities carried out by the Foundation on the recognition and accommodation of religious diversity as basic elements for the guarantee of the effective exercise of religious freedom and the construction of an adequate coexistence framework. Specifically, our work is oriented to the analysis of the achievement of the four main objectives of the foundation: 1º Contribute to the institutional strengthening of confessions and religious entities. 2º Improve the public management of religious diversity. 3º Influence the construction of an informed and tolerant public opinion with religious plurality. 4º Stimulate the active participation of other relevant actors for the recognition and accommodation of religious diversity,
