The Haustafel and the Babaylans in the Philippines: Silhouettes of Displacement and Transformation

Abstract

This paper seeks to analyze the Christianization of the pre-Hispanic Filipinos, and the subsequent embedding of the patriarchal church in an egalitarian indigenous culture. This paper explores how these opposing roles affect the culture of the present Philippines. The study also looks at the biblical household codes, and how they suppressed the babaylans (women priests) in the process of Philippine Christianization. The study concludes how Christ integrates these ideas.
