Psychological Variability and Meaning in Life: The Role of Spirituality, Emotional Intelligence, and Personality Factors in Predicting Life Meaning in Clergy

Abstract

Religious vocation interest has shown a rather dramatic change in the Roman Catholic Church. While clergy shortages and sex offending clergy headlines have seemed to take more notice, less research has investigated the longitudinal factors that contribute to clergy life meaning. This paper considers the factors that contribute to clergy and women and men religious over the course of a 5-year span, highlighting psychological factors (e.g., personality, emotional intelligence, spirituality) that help those in religious life and contributing factors that influence leaving religious life.
