Islamic Teaching on Environmental Stewardship: A Comparative Analysis of the Quran and Historical Muslim Sources on Environmental Stewardship

Abstract

Islam as a religion does not contradict with the teachings of science, particularly in the case of environmental stewardship. By exploring different Islamic sources, such as the Quran, Sunnah and jurisprudence, this paper establishes how science serve as an extension of faith that allows Muslims to take ethical decisions concerning earth and other Allah’s creations. In the light of Islamic sources, the word “Khalifah” (vicegerent) is critically analysed to understand how Allah enjoins upon believers a sense of responsibility to become a vicegerent on land (Quran, 2:30), and to not abuse earth and spread corruption (Quran, 2:60). While exploring a relation between Allah and a vicegerent, it is examined as how a vicegerent is not entitled to do what he wishes, rather is obliged to carry out the will of Allah.
