Proliferation of Prayer Mountains as Sacred Spaces among the Indigenous Pentecostals in South-western Nigeria

Abstract

The Indigenous Pentecostal churches have contributed to the development of Christianity in Nigeria through the window of culture. The interrogation with culture which brought a brand of Christianity that is contextualised within the purview of African milieu was a factor for their expansion in south-western Nigeria where the movement is prominent. It was the emergence of these churches that brought about the utilization of prayer mountains as sacred spaces to communicate with God and to seek solutions to their problems. The proliferation of these mountains is increasing unabatedly among the indigenous churches, and the reason for this has to be probed into. The majority of members of these churches now seek spiritual solutions on these prayer mountains while they are neglecting the regular and conventional worship centres. This paper considers the background to Prayer Mountains in Nigeria, its proliferation and implications for Christianity and socio-economic activities in south-western Nigeria. The paper ends with recommendations and conclusions.
