Divine Violence, Literature and Religion: An Analysis of Social Inequalities from Peripheral Narratives

Abstract

In societies characterized by notable social asymmetries, as it is the case of Brazil, the relations between center and periphery exist under the logic of the prevailing economic system - capitalism - in which one submits to the other. This model of production and social organization is the creator of abundant social inequalities. The precarious life of some people, the daily violence of cities, the unemployment, the truculence of police bring out a common social condition: the periphery. In this communication proposal, we argue that understand and represent violence and inequality, puts in new terms the understanding of marginality. In order to do so, we will promote an approximation of four literary productions, of two authors, that allow the possibility of reflection on the current social model. From Deus foi almoçar (Ferrez, 2012), Manual prático do ódio (Ferrez, 2003), Vasto Mundo (Maria Valéria Rezende, 2001) and Outros Cantos (Maria Valéria Rezende, 2016) we will discuss how the perception of abandonment and absence of the State appears articulated to the idea of an absent God and a religiosity nuanced by the parameters of the centers of political and economic power. Literary criticism will allow us to say that just as the margin is a social and discursive construction of the center; literary productions, religious practices, and modes of organization of everyday life established as canonical can be questioned. Finally, we will contribute to the reflection that values the social mechanisms of resistances (literary, religious and economic) that emerge from the margins.
