Religious Tourism as a Means of Enlightenment to Environmental Degradation: Pilgrimage to Healing Sites

Abstract

Well known and frequently visited pilgrimage sites such as Lourdes in France, which has recently endorsed and approved the reality and authenticity of the 70th physical miracle, as well as Capernaum in Israel where Jesus healed the demon-possessed man attract millions of visitors annually in the common quest for divine intervention and healing of physical bodies. Religious tourism, by its very nature, encourages a spiritual awakening to the reality of the impact of humanity on the environment. Many of the diseases that are presented for healing at the healing sites are directly linked to the degradation of the environment and the neglect of the planet. Children are the hope for the future of the planet and the writer has observed on World Children’s Day a visit by thousands of children, many blind, crippled or otherwise infirm to visit the Lourdes healing site. Many of the illnesses and diseases presented for healing at the healing sites are directly a result of environmental mismanagement or degradation. Recent trends in pilgrimage and religious travel have observed visits by large groups visiting the churches planted in outlying areas and these could be emissaries for change to environmental policies.
