Developing Cultural Awareness Through Local Filipino Literature

Abstract

The study analyses how local literature (from the Cordillera) was used in developing cultural awareness among students in Grade 7, 8, and 9. The research was done by identifying the local literatures discussed in the classroom, how the local literatures were discussed, and how this helped in developing cultural awareness among students. A qualitative review was conducted using case study method. In gathering data, interview with students and teachers and classroom observations were conducted. From the data collected, twin main themes emerged. First, local literature is used as an instrument in knowing ones culture. Students get to know more about their own culture and the culture of others, and it enriches their vocabulary on local terms. Second, local literature is used as a basis. As a basis, teachers consider the culture of students in giving classroom activities, preparing instructional materials, emphasising social values, and in encouraging and inspiring students.
