It’s in the Vault: Lessons from Rebuilding Our Company-wide Wiki

Abstract

Our paper outlines the approach we took to update our company’s wiki (intranet), discuss what made this project a success, and also share our lessons learned. Although we had the opportunity to build our intranet tool internally, we feel the approach and steps we took can be applied to any intranet-like project. In this workshop, we discuss how we structured our project team. We used the People, Process, and Technology framework, and included representation from our Culture (HR) team, Knowledge Management team, and our internal technology team. We discuss the problem our new intranet was trying to solve, how we regained trust in the tool, failures we overcame, how we developed an information architecture, a content migration strategy, and integrated change management practices throughout the project. We also discuss how we measured success, what metrics we continue to track, and our lessons learned so that others can learn from our experiences. It is important to us that our paper is not purely a showcase of our tool, but an opportunity to share our learnings by highlighting the journey of the Vault (our wiki) through its creation, implementation, and iteration.
