Research on Art Design Intervention in Enterprise Innovation Management

Abstract

The “crossover collaboration,” or interdisciplinary study, has been highly discussed as a trend in recent years. However, it is not a new topic in the design management area. Many companies seek creative and innovative solutions by taking advantage of creative professionals’ skills and their multicultural background so as to generate ideas and inspire other employees. This can bring economic benefits and cultivate a more effective organisation. At the same time, there is also a demand from consumers or clients as the driving force to make art intervention and design thinking an innovative management strategy to be incubated in corporate culture. There is a long history of the artists-in-residence at big enterprises’ technical departments in Silicon Valley. For instance, over 200 artists have been invited by Facebook’s FB AIR project in order to do on-site work for its offices all around the world, setting art+technology lab for inspiring their teams’ innovation. Recently, artistic interventions have become increasingly popular among small organisations. As a researcher with an art design and arts and cultural management academic background, I research this in order to figure out how organisational creativity and innovation are influenced by artistic intervention and design thinking, and what is their value. Furthermore, this kind of art intervention mode has already been a well-developed management strategy in the West, especially for some big-name enterprises, but is just now emerging in Asia. Thus, how existing cases can be studied and applied in that market will be discussed in this study as well.
