Making an Inclusive Campus for Undocumented Students: Reframing College Administration Practices

Abstract

Approximately 98,000 undocumented students graduate high school each year. For some, going to college is not in their future because of financial and social barriers, but for many others, earning a college degree is the only way to elevate them from socioeconomic hardships. Presently, there are no federal statutes that preclude undocumented students from enrolling in America’s higher education institutions, so a number of colleges and universities have opened their doors to include these students as part of the learning community. Due to their immigration status, many undocumented students do not fully participate in the college experience in fear of deportation. The purpose of this paper is to explore ways in which colleges and universities can make their campus more inclusive and welcoming for undocumented students.
