An Information Privacy Governance Framework for Contemporary Organizations

Abstract

Recently, Facebook reported at least 50 million users accounts are at risk after hackers exploited a vulnerability that allowed them access to personal data. The breach came one year after the Cambridge Analytica scandal renews concerns regarding privacy and trust, not just for Facebook, but social media in general. Privacy is about what happens to information once it’s held by others, whether government, banks, telecom provides, or social network sites. Information privacy of data and information has become increasingly important in collaborations across organizational boundaries. Emerging trends in technology have often led to concerns about the impact of those advances on privacy. This paper discusses the importance of privacy, the various privacy laws and regional regulatory differences, and assesses their impacts on organizations and individuals. A governance framework is proposed with combinations in awareness of the current regulations and technologies, with impacts on privacy explained along with a case study. The importance of information protection can be maintained with proper governance by all responsible parties within and outside the organization.
