Promotion of Indigenous Knowledge: Academic Libraries Perspective

Abstract

This study looked into the library public services like reference service, circulation service, and dissemination service of academic libraries in Region 2 in promoting Indigenous Knowledge (IK) using descriptive method whereby questionnaire was used in gathering data that were tabulated and analyzed using weighted mean. The study found out that academic library personnel’s awareness on the different aspects of IK needs improvement for them to be cognizant of their role to the different aspects of IK. Their level of awareness is ascribed to different factors like reluctance to participating to research, limited collaboration to the local community due to some institutional policies and procedures, and absence of avenues to expand his or her views about IK. It was also discovered that promotion of IK is circumscribed since the respondents are disposed to give importance to IK as one of the most pertinent knowledge that is worth publicizing. Also, the extent of implementation of circulation and reference service is moderately implemented because services are more focused on the traditional practice of charging and discharging of materials. This paper recommends that academic library personnel should recognize the importance of IK and integrate it into their services. They should strengthen their partnership with the Indigenous Peoples community and that Library organizations should include the topic on IK in formulating their seminars to enhance librarian’s knowledge on IK.
