Enhancing the Organizational Culture of Compliance: Encouraging Wilful Conformance

Abstract

Many leaders fall for the general misconception that the most effective way of addressing issues which contribute to incidents and accidents is to add perceived “layers of safety.” This is generally executed by introducing increasingly sophisticated technical systems. In addition, in dealing with violations of codes of conduct, the usual response is to find fault and then reprimand. The termination of an errant employee may indeed erroneously appear to address the issue. This session asks challenging questions which provoke delegates into thinking differently by considering uncommon but proven and relevant solutions to noncompliance. It would also train participants on how to effectively improve safety by giving adequate and appropriate consideration to Human Factors and their consequences. Session participants will learn: the difference between technical and nontechnical skills (NTS); how to apply NTS to address root causal factors of incidents and accidents; how to use NTS to enhance general adherence to company rules and regulations; and how to use NTS to assess company operations. We will also look at how to design effective training syllabi and operational regulations to encourage wilful employee conformance with regulations rather than the costly universal process of enforced compliance.
