Teaching Qualitative Research Methodology at the Catholic University of Korea: Introducing the Strategic Analysis of Culture

Abstract

Curriculum responses to imperatives to globalize higher education may productively focus on incorporation of introductory-level undergraduate qualitative research methodology training to investigate international exchange student experiences at their host institutions. The teaching of qualitative research methodology provides the opportunity to explore the concept of value as applied to organizational management and leadership. In this pedagogical case study, norms are distinguished from values by focusing on behavioral principles that may be explicit or implicit, equating with attitudes. Highlighting the presentation and application of a theoretical framework for conceptualizing relative differences in national cultures from the perspective of organizational management is an effective perspective to present this issue and its core elements to students. The business administration field has a wide body of literature that presents the challenges of managing and multicultural/multinational organizational staff. It highlights that developing a theory of culture is a step to conceptualizing how to articulate and reconcile these differences to these staff members as the organizational leader facilitates communication among personnel. Intercultural/international perceptions of other cultures, specifically stereotyping, are part of the challenge to effective leadership communication within a multicultural/multinational environment. These theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing cultural differences are challenged by the imperative to conceptualize experiential learning’s contribution to value and norm development as investigated through narrative research methodology. International education’s contribution to developing greater cultural competency may thereby be more fully exploited.
