Abstract
“Miss Campbell, I don’t want to read!” When I first began teaching in August of 2006, I encountered numerous students who endlessly expressed their negative feelings toward reading. As a supplement to our reading program, I developed a number of innovative activities to capture the attention of my students, several of which have been adopted by my colleagues, involving the reading of labels and various kinds of brochures. The reading of labels obviously has health and nutritional implications. I have used materials ranging from food labels and mp3 literature to theme park brochures and travel guides. Students immediately begin to understand the value of reading and express their excitement concerning this new, innovative approach. Furthermore, I have diversified my reading curriculum to include menus, catalogs, instruction manuals, brochures, songbooks, and other printed materials. This approach to reading has been a game changer for elementary, middle, and high school students. Instead of viewing reading as a skill only used at school, students realize that reading is an essential part of life!
