Education and Crises: The Transition from a Blended to an E-learning System at the Saudi Electronic University

Abstract

Economic, political, and natural crises lead to disturbance in the educational system and have significant impact on the educational process and quality. Consequently, universities and higher education institutions must respond immediately to ensure the continuity and quality of the educational process during any occurring crisis. This paper reviews and evaluates the implementation of the rapid transition from blended to e-learning system at the Saudi Electronic University during Covid-19 pandemic. The paper considers technical, institutional, and academic adjustments that the University has implemented to ensure the reliability, and quality of education. The paper reviews the challenges that the University faced during this crisis and will evaluate the IT and academic adjustments as well. The study contributes to the high education sector in Saudi Arabia in enhancing their readiness for e-learning transition. The reviewed model of transition that has been implemented at the Saudi Electronic University can be utilized to help forming strategies and policies and is expected to support any future mandatory transitions to e-learning.
