Taming the Rebel Child: The Role of the Governess in Jane Eyre and Firelight (1997)

Abstract

This research delves to portray the governess as a fundamental figure in developing early childhood learning. Both the literary work Jane Eyre and the 1997 film Firelight showcase a carefree, rebellious child who is more attracted to the world outside the study room. Each of them have parental figures who are immersed in their own work life to pay the required attention for the child’s schooling. The governess enters into this impossible scene as an underestimated figure who with supreme patience and revolutionary teaching mechanisms, not only tames the rebel child but harnesses the childhood curiosity thereby creating an innate need to gain knowledge. She becomes a figure of admiration and respect to her student. Ultimately the paper attempts at reviving the role of a trusted and dedicated governess to enhance the practice of home-schooling and the importance of growing in-home libraries to expand early childhood learning in the present age.
