Hands-on Learning for Freshman: Design, Implementation, and Outcomes

Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of hands-on learning (HOL) in training first year chemical engineering undergraduates. While no one definition of HOL exists, our interpretation of HOL is largely influenced by Kolb’s experiential learning theory which suggests that “learning is a process whereby concepts are derived from and continuously modified by experiences”. With the intent of providing students a preview of biotechnology/bioprocessing industry and helping students acquire higher order skills, a HOL-based course titled Engineering Principles and Practice (EPP) was introduced in Year 1. The pedagogical design of the course encompassed lab work, lectures, reflection sessions, projects and assessments. The adopted assessment methodology (100% continuous assessment with no end-of-semester examination) aimed at evaluating the quality of learning and mastery of higher order skills by students. The student feedback has been positive with many students finding the HOL-based course useful in providing meaningful learning opportunities. Student feedback showed that laboratory activities encouraged them to construct their own knowledge ‘by doing and experiencing’. In the efforts to solve the activity, the students gained an understanding of the foundational concepts of biochemical engineering and developed essential problem solving and critical thinking skills. Students felt that compiling and presenting laboratory portfolio and making presentations served to enhance their communication skills and they were better equipped to present technical content in a clear, accurate, comprehensive, and professional manner. Working in teams allowed students to build mutual respect for one another and promoted free exchange of opinions and ideas.
