Effective Implementation of Non-Formal Education Curriculum in Nigeria: From Conventional Teaching Approach to Learning and Innovation Skills Strategy

Abstract

Twenty-first century teaching and learning have given rise to innovations in all sub-sectors of basic education in Nigeria including Adult and Non-Formal Education (ANFE). One of the challenges of teacher education is the need to acquire requisite teaching and learning skills capable of meeting the curriculum requirements of the subject matter. In Non-Formal Education (NFE) curriculum which has been designed to cater for the adult learners’ literacy needs at the basic and post literacy levels in Nigeria, there are innovative ideas geared towards ensuring that teaching and learning process is ‘Learner-centred, Interactive, Participatory and Activity-based’. The onus is on facilitators to use the appropriate teaching and learning strategy that will help to meet the teaching and learning requirements of the NFE curriculum. This paper therefore attempts to review the current classroom practice in respect of the teaching and learning process specifically at the basic literacy level and the micro-teaching experience of adult education teacher-trainees in Nigerian colleges of education. It also identifies the shortcomings of the current ANFE curriculum/minimum standard in meeting the teaching and learning requirements of the NFE curriculum. It introduces in practical terms, the Learning and Innovation Skills (LIS) strategy as an alternative to whatever strategy presently in use by facilitators to teach the basic literacy learners. The paper also recommends that the ANFE minimum standard/curriculum be restructured to reflect the teaching and learning innovations as specified in the NFE curriculum for effective training of adult education teachers/facilitators.
