Reading Achievement : Improving Academic Achievement, Lowering Crime Rates, Poverty Rates, and Mental Illness

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the impacts of reading achievement and explore ways to improve it so we can see positive outcomes throughout society. Reading achievement is a key factor in academic success, and lowering poverty rates, crime rates, and mental illness in adulthood. In the United States 33.1% of African American children live in poverty while only 11.1% of white children do. Children who live in poverty are more likely to attend schools that are failing and underfunded, lowering their chances at academic success and being about to compete with their middle class peers therefore increasing reading achievement evens the playing field and gives everyone the chance to succeed.
