Online Instructional Scaffolding in L2 Learning


Tailored to the needs of the student with the intention of helping students achieve their L2 learning goals, online instructional scaffolding given by instructor during the online L2 learning process helps the students to reduce their learning anxiety and improve their poor ability to regulate their learning and is more efficient in activating the ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) of students’ L2 learning. Therefore, this study suggests the following guidelines of online instructional scaffolding in L2 learning: 1. Diagnose students’ online learning needs and anxiety; 2. Set up shared online learning goals; 3. Establish an online learning community; 4. Provide tailored online assistance; 5. Monitor students’ pursuit of learning goals; 6. Give feedback; 7. Actively intervene in students’ online learning frustration. Online instructional scaffolding also relies a lot on instructor’s ability to blend learning materials of various source, using different and continuous renewal web-based techniques skillfully, activating students’ L2 learning self-regulation and guiding their collaborative online learning.
