Abstract
Dark Tourism or ‘Thanatourism’ is travel to sites associated with death or human suffering. It exists on a continuum from the very dark (911 Memorial, Auschwitz) to the light-dark (Cemetery, Ghost, and Voodoo) tours. This paper argues that Dark Tourism in countries such as Cuba, used as a case study with revolutionary, cemetery, fort, ghost, and Santeria, can enhance their touristic packages in much the same way as cities such as New Orleans, Savannah, and Salem have done in the U.S. by engaging tourists in the tourism metaverse both before, during and after their visit.
