The Function of Social Sustainability in Music Festivals: The Case of Rock Imperium Festival

Abstract

Event tourism has become popular in recent decades, with many tourists attending music festivals every year, attracted by a wide range of concerts in different international destinations. At this time, the need to analyse the sustainability of such events arises given the magnitude they have reached. While the vast majority of studies have focused on how this tourist movement affects environmental sustainability, in this paper a deeper reflection is made, moving towards another type of sustainability, social sustainability. The attendance of tourists at a festival must maintain a harmony with the destination and its inhabitants, in this trade off, both should benefit, the residents of the destination expect to obtain an improvement in their standard of living thanks to what the tourists bring them, which through their socially sustainable behaviour describes a curve whose function generates prosperity. This function is the one that is developed after confirming the hypotheses put forward from the point of view of the prosperity of the residents and the contribution of the tourists themselves to social sustainability.
