Introduction to Orishaism as a Modality of Spiritual Tourism: A Space for Cultural Enrichment without Stereotypes

Abstract

In the post-pandemic present, an increase in spiritual faith has been seen worldwide. After the global limitations imposed by COVID-19, according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the number of foreign tourists in the world doubled in 2022 and will be close to pre-COVID 19 levels in 2023. One of the most significant flows of worldwide travel is represented by spiritual tourism. This work seeks to introduce Orishaism among other definitions that the term has, as a form of spiritual tourism in which tourists seek to be in contact with the deities (Orishas) and their environment. Due to the close link that exists between the liturgy of the Orishas and the different artistic and cultural representations in which these deities are involved, there are three large groups of tourists: 1- the esoteric tur-orishaist, 2- the enigmatic tur-orishaist and the cosmogonic tur-orishaist, these groups are defined and characterised in the body of this work through examples of the growing flow of travellers interested in this type of tourism.
