Abstract
The psychological well-being of the individual has become an important concern during the pandemic COVID-19 and compelled individuals, families, and communities to find ways to engage in activities that encourage reflection on life to maintain wellbeing. The lockdown fatigue has ignited the urge to identify creative ways to fulfill their happiness needs and spiritual tourism is adopted to combat the menace of degrading their wellbeing. Although inclination toward spirituality and enriching wellbeing through tourism is enhancing the demand for spiritual tourism, the field suffers from the lack of a comprehensive approach to capture the experiences of spiritual tourists for developing spiritual tourism destinations. This review identified the factors contributing to the development of spiritual tourism destinations by assimilating spiritual tourist experiences on the bases of systematic literature review, an amalgamation of self-determination theory, the activity, setting, experience and benefit framework and attention restoration theory has been employed. The review suggests that although more research is being conducted in the spiritual tourism field, they are fragmented and context specific, necessitating the need for more generalizable and empirically tested investigations.
