Using Smart Technology to Develop Medical Tourism in Macao

Abstract

In the increasingly competitive tourism industry, medical tourism has emerged as an uncommon but profitable niche (Connell 2013). Macao has a unique foundation for tourism development, and in response to the demand for moderate economic diversification, the Macao government is also vigorously promoting the development of comprehensive health industry. To combine the development needs of the comprehensive health industry in Macao and the exclusive advantages of tourism, medical tourism is a useful exploration of the organic combination. However, due to various constraints, Macao needs to overcome key bottlenecks with the help of smart technologies. This research focuses on using smart technologies to develop medical tourism in Macao. The research aims to identify the barriers that affect the development of medical tourism in Macao, to explore the role of smart technologies in addressing the barriers, and further to propose a pragmatic and actionable framework for the development of medical tourism in Macao. A mixed method was adopted in this study and in-depth interviews with experts including academia, hospital representatives, and pharmaceutical company representative were conducted to gather qualitative data. To gather quantitative data, questionnaires related to the expectation of using smart technology in Macao medical tourism among potential medical tourists were conducted. By combining 7 interviews, 250 questionnaires, and a comprehensive analysis, this systematic study will inform and assist governmental decisions and industry development.
