Sustainable Cultural Tourism: Blurred Lines

Abstract

With awareness comes the risk of commercialization and exploitation of cultural resources. Need drives artisans and practitioners to bend the sanctity of their craft to accommodate the requirements of patrons. This research explores how blurred the line between preservation of knowledge systems and their commodification. A literature review of sustainable cultural tourism models with focused case studies within the multi-cultural Indian context was undertaken. The aim is to understand where policies / schemes fail to protect the sanctity and associated belief systems in order to advise against the erosion of ethics related to culture.
