Changing Dimensions of Contemporary Tourism: Tourism Potential in Ohafia, Abia State, Nigeria

Abstract

The opportunities of having viable tourism potential as a resource for development is very significant, most especially in developing countries like Nigeria. This paper explored the various tangible and intangible cultural heritages in Ohafia, with the aim of generating a high level tourism and hospitable base to the state and the country. This paper also highlighted the intricacies and values of the different tangible and intangible cultural heritages in Ohafia. Other major subjects of this study were the origin and the reasons of populations’ migration from the original abode. It also delved into some of the tangible cultural heritages like the sacred squares, the caves, the forest reserves, and the excursion cliffs. Others include the intangible cultural heritages which include the Ohafia war dance, the new yam festival (iwaji) and the traditional retirement (igba ota nma). Data was collected and analyzed. There were vital suggestions, contributions, guides, and recommendations geared towards bringing cohesion, harmony, efficiency, consistency, and awareness that may be capable of increasing the attraction and economic boost to the existing tourism potentials of the community.
