Abstract
On group travel packages to Israel, one is confronted repeatedly by the significant gap between religious tourism and spiritual pilgrimage. This paper seeks to address the history of that gap, some of its current manifestations, and what the implications are for the present and future of religiously motivated travel. With a special focus on Christian religious tourism in Israel, this paper offers insights and applications to modern travelers, tour guides, historical and archeological tourism, religious tourists and spiritual pilgrims. Economic insights are also gleaned.
