Rainbow Tourism in the Philippines

Abstract

This research study was conducted to identify the potential indicators of rainbow (LGBT) tourism as a social and an economic contributor in the Philippines. The study found that bisexuals comprise the largest population of tourists that visit the Philippines. There is no denying LGBT travelers are a dynamic and influential segment within the tourism sector. They have positive impacts on job creation and job opportunities among local community, thus contributing to the local economy of Phiippines. We found the LGBT market spends higher and has more buying power than heterosexuals. Based on the salient findings of the study, action programs should be proposed and formulated. Rainbow Tourism as a form of tourism can be developed by the Department of Tourism. Regulatory stakeholders should understand and open to the idea of “Rainbow Tourism” through education of concepts and practices in the conduct of facilitating LGBT products. Establish a LGBT-dedicated tour operator to cater different LGBT needs. Increase the need for mainstream publicity – inform and educate public in order to dissipate conservative attitudes towards LGBTs. The local government should seek support from DOT in promoting Philippines as “LGBT-friendly” or “Rainbow Tourism” destination. The country should consider counting LGBT as another indicator in determining tourist arrivals. Further research could be enhanced by some issues identified in this study. The researcher proposes some action programs that can be formulated to earn a strong mark as a Rainbow Tourism destination in the Philippines.
