Sustainable Tourism for the Provincial Reserve of Staten Island, Argentina

Abstract

Currently, the promotion and tourist exploitation of Staten Island, an island twenty-nine kilometres off the eastern extremity of the Argentine portion of Tierra del Fuego, is minimal. In this work, depending on the investigation of the destination (including the survey of its natural and historical heritage), the feasibility of including it in a much more ambitious provincial and municipal tourism development plan, depending on the potential demand, is explored. A key point for this project is that any activity that involves contact with Staten Island must respect the sustainability and conservation parameters of its current character of Provincial Ecological Reserve. Likewise, it is the object of this study to allow an increase in the tourist activity and development of the city of Ushuaia, as a port of entry for the entire region, gradually promoting the maritime, tourist, and regional integration of the Island of the States with that city and its environment. In order to achieve this, specific objectives have been designed that include an adequate tourism promotion, and the possibility of concessioning the tourist excursions in a few operators whose commercialization would correspond to national travel agencies with international reach. Finally, this work also contributes to publicizing various historical events of great relevance that occurred on that island, which until now had not been fully compiled and thus exposed. All this without mentioning the mysteries and legends that also integrate the heritage of this territory.
